San Jose is the third-largest city in California and the tenth-largest in the United States. It is located at the southern end of the San Francisco Bay Area, a region commonly referred to as Silicon Valley. Once a small farming city, San Jose became a magnet for suburban newcomers and today sports a large concentration of high-technology engineering, computer, and microprocessor companies.

High economic growth began almost twenty years ago and San Jose continues to enjoy low unemployment and one of the highest median household incomes of any city with a population over 300,000 people. San Jose lists twenty-five companies with over one thousand employees, including the headquarters of Adobe Systems, Cisco, SunPower, BEA Systems, and eBay, as well as major facilities for Hewlett-Packard, Flextronics, IBM, Hitachi and Lockheed Martin. Sizable government employers include the city government, Santa Clara County, and San José State University. Acer's United States division has its offices in San Jose.
